It was the last league game of the season for the boys today as we welcomed EA FFIT Football Club FFIT Football Club to Hillwood.
It was a lineup with a lot of changes today, a few boys playing out of position but enough in the squad to give EA a good game. We started off well, the ball was getting knocked about and recycled as we took a patient approach to the game, all early chances for EA were easily dealt with as the defence looked solid. At the other end, it was much the same as we struggled trouble their keeper. We found ourselves 1 down when a cross from our right hand side sneaks through everyone before finding the corner with nothing Jonesy could do to stop it. 0-1. Not long after we have a free kick around 25 yards which is well struck by Justin who forces the EA goalie to pull off a great save. At around the half hour mark we’re set up to defend a corner, a ball comes in gets knocked away but we don’t get out quick enough and a shot gets pulled off giving Jonesy no chance with 20 bodies blocking him. 0-2. Just before halftime, a throw in finds its way into Ronnie & the edge of the box which he knocked over the centre half’s head and is unlucky not to pull us one back.
HT 0-2
EA came out much more offensive in the second half and we could tell straight away it was going to open up more chances for us if we played it right, and we did. Iain Rankin was unlucky with a few, so to was Cubby & Justin but hats off to the opposition keeper who kept EA in it. Around 60 mins in and we get a free kick around 20 yards out as Justin is taken out. Up steps Cubby as he puts his foot through, gets through the wall and ultimately the keeper 1-2! With EA not allowed to create much, it was us that was on the ascendency and on another day (and another keeper) we would be comfortably in front but it wasn’t to be. We did get back level through as we broke from EA’s corner and Iain finds Cubby well who smashes it into the roof of the net. 2-2! We were pushing for a winner but the legs were starting to show and with 2 minutes to go EA get through to find the winner. 2-3. The boys were feeling hard done by but threw everything at it for the last couple of minutes in an effort to get something they deserve from the game but it wasn’t to be.
FT 2-3
The better side lost today in a great game of football at Hillwood. Credit where it’s due to EA who are worthy league champions and deserve their night of celebrations and the hangovers tomorrow, we’ll see you’s again next season in the championship
